Americans Detained: Immigration Agent Holds & ProPublica Investigation

Understanding the Scope of Immigration Enforcement Actions Involving U.S. ‍Citizens

This article details the methodology behind‍ our examination into ⁤concerning reports of interactions between U.S. citizens and immigration enforcement agents. Americans have shared numerous troubling experiences, and‍ we aimed to provide a clearer picture of ‍the extent of these encounters.

How We investigated

It’s crucial to understand that the government doesn’t currently track instances of U.S. citizens being detained by immigration officers.Therefore, determining⁤ the full scope of these events is incredibly challenging. However,we undertook ⁤a thorough review to build as complete a picture as possible.

Hear’s a breakdown of our process:

* Extensive Case Review: We analyzed over 170 cases gathered from the beginning of the Trump governance through October⁣ 5th.
* Categorization of Incidents: We organized these cases into two primary categories:
* Citizenship Questioned: More than 50 cases involved Americans held while their citizenship was being questioned.
‍ * ⁤ Arrests During/Near Immigration Actions: Approximately 130 Americans were arrested by immigration agents, frequently enough during protests⁣ or while witnessing other ⁣immigration⁤ arrests.‍ This⁢ included over a dozen elected officials. Notably,⁣ many of these‍ arrests did not lead to charges or were ultimately dismissed.
* ⁤ Racial Profiling Concerns: We also documented nine additional cases where citizens expressed concerns about potential racial profiling following extensive questioning by immigration officials. This included instances like a Mescalero Apache tribal member asked for his passport in a store⁤ and a California man receiving a mistaken deportation order.
* Data Sources: Our research involved sifting through a wide range of sources, including:
* English- ⁢and⁤ Spanish-language social media posts.
⁣ * Lawsuits and court records.
* ⁣ Local media reports.
* Geographic ⁣Limitations: We acknowledge that our accounting of events in Portland, Oregon, and Chicago is limited due to ongoing developments in those cities.

What We Didn’t Include

To maintain focus and clarity, we made specific choices about what types of cases to exclude from our⁢ analysis.

* Border and Airport Detentions: We did not review cases involving detentions‍ at airports or the border, as ⁣increased questioning of citizens is more common in those locations.
* Post-Encounter Arrests: We excluded cases where Americans were arrested ‍ after an initial encounter with ⁤immigration agents, as‍ these cases typically involve the judicial process.
* Local Police Arrests ‍at Protests: Arrests of protestors⁣ by local police were also⁣ excluded, as these individuals are generally booked into local ‍jails ‍with access to legal resources and family contact.
