Tight leaderboard Emerges at albany as Players Battle for Position
The Hero World Challenge is shaping up to be a thrilling contest, with a crowded leaderboard after the second round at Albany Golf Club. Several players find themselves within striking distance, setting the stage for a dramatic weekend.
Akshay Bhatia delivered a clutch performance, carding a 68 with a birdie on the 18th to join Wyndham Clark, david Spaun, and Hideki matsuyama in the lead. Young completed the group at 10-under 134. Remarkably, nearly half of the 20-player field is separated by just two shots, highlighting the intense competition.
Spaun’s Eagle-Fueled Round
David Spaun‘s round was highlighted by a remarkable display of scoring prowess. He capitalized on the par-5s,converting opportunities into eagles on the 6th and 14th holes.
* He drove to 3 feet on the 6th for an eagle.
* His tee shot on the 14th landed just 5 feet from the pin, resulting in another eagle.
* Spaun nearly added a third eagle on the 15th, narrowly missing a 15-foot putt.
This strong performance helped him overcome a shaky start, with a pair of bogeys on the opening four holes. “Didn’t get a great start, but salvaged a pretty decent round,” Spaun commented.
Bhatia’s Resilience and New Caddie Dynamic
Akshay Bhatia demonstrated notable resilience, navigating a challenging back nine. He saved par from just off the green on the 16th and battled through a tough break on the 17th.
He chipped through the green on the par-3 17th, landing in a bunker, but recovered with a 15-foot putt to limit the damage to a bogey. Bhatia is also benefiting from a new partnership with caddie Joe Greiner, previously Max Homa’s longtime looper. The left-handed connection seems to be working well, fostering effective interaction.
Scheffler and Others in Contention
Scottie Scheffler remains firmly in the mix, posting a 69 and sitting at 9-under 135. He’s joined by Alex Noren and Sepp straka. Justin Rose, a former Albany resident, is just one shot back after a solid 68.
Scheffler acknowledged some minor errors but expressed overall satisfaction with his game. “I think I did some good things out there. Just a few too many mistakes, but overall still felt pretty good,” he said.
Horschel’s Pursuit and Masters Implications
Billy Horschel fired a 68, placing him five shots behind the leaders. His return to competitive golf after hip surgery is a compelling story.
For Horschel, a strong finish carries added weight. He’s currently ranked No. 45 in the world, and a top performance could secure his spot in the Masters Tournament, as the top 50 players at year-end qualify. You can feel the stakes are high for him this week.
