The daily ritual of coffee or tea may offer more than just a morning boost; a large, decades-long study suggests a connection between moderate consumption of these beverages and a reduced risk of dementia. Researchers have found that enjoying two to three cups of caffeinated coffee a day, or one to two cups of tea, is associated with slower cognitive decline and a lower likelihood of developing dementia. This research, published in the journal JAMA, adds to a growing body of evidence exploring the potential protective effects of dietary habits on brain health.
Dementia, a syndrome characterized by a decline in cognitive function, affects millions worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, over 55 million people globally are living with dementia as of 2020 and this number is projected to rise to 78 million by 2030 and 139 million by 2050. The WHO estimates that the global cost of dementia in 2019 was US$1.3 trillion.
While there are currently limited treatments to reverse the course of dementia, increasing attention is being paid to preventative measures. Lifestyle factors, including diet, exercise, and social engagement, are now recognized as potentially crucial in mitigating risk. This latest study, leveraging an exceptionally long-term dataset, provides compelling evidence that a simple dietary choice – enjoying a daily cup of coffee or tea – could be a valuable component of a brain-healthy lifestyle.
A 43-Year Look at Coffee, Tea, and Cognitive Health
The findings stem from an analysis of data collected over an impressive 43 years from two ongoing studies: the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study (HPFS). These studies, involving a combined total of 131,821 participants, have meticulously tracked the health and lifestyle habits of a large cohort of American nurses and health professionals. Researchers examined the relationship between the consumption of caffeinated coffee, tea, and decaffeinated coffee and the incidence of dementia, as well as measures of cognitive function.
Over the course of the study, 11,033 participants developed dementia. The analysis revealed that individuals who consumed higher amounts of caffeinated coffee had an 18% lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who rarely or never drank it. These coffee drinkers also reported lower rates of subjective cognitive decline – a self-reported perception of memory or thinking problems – (7.8% versus 9.5%) and demonstrated better performance on certain objective cognitive tests. Similar, though less pronounced, patterns were observed among tea drinkers.
Interestingly, decaffeinated coffee did not reveal the same protective associations. This suggests that caffeine, a naturally occurring stimulant, may be a key factor driving the observed benefits. However, researchers emphasize that further investigation is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms at play.
The Role of Caffeine and Polyphenols
Coffee and tea are rich in bioactive compounds, including caffeine and polyphenols. Polyphenols are plant-based antioxidants that have been linked to a variety of health benefits, including reduced inflammation and protection against cellular damage. “While our results are encouraging, it’s important to remember that the effect size is small and there are lots of important ways to protect cognitive function as we age,” explained senior author Daniel Wang, MD, ScD, associate scientist with the Channing Division of Network Medicine in the Mass General Brigham Department of Medicine and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School. “Our study suggests that caffeinated coffee or tea consumption can be one piece of that puzzle.”
Genetic Predisposition and the Benefits of Coffee
The researchers also explored whether the protective effects of coffee and tea varied depending on an individual’s genetic predisposition to dementia. They found that the benefits were consistent across individuals with both high and low genetic risk, suggesting that caffeine may be broadly beneficial regardless of genetic factors. Lead author Yu Zhang, MBBS, MS, PhD student at Harvard Chan School and a research trainee at Mass General Brigham, stated, “We also compared people with different genetic predispositions to developing dementia and saw the same results – meaning coffee or caffeine is likely equally beneficial for people with high and low genetic risk of developing dementia.”
Implications for Public Health and Future Research
The findings of this study have important implications for public health. Given the widespread consumption of coffee and tea globally, even a modest reduction in dementia risk could have a significant impact on population health. However, experts caution against viewing coffee or tea as a “magic bullet” for preventing dementia. A comprehensive approach to brain health, including a healthy diet, regular exercise, social engagement, and cognitive stimulation, remains essential.
