Severe winds in Spain significantly impacted cycling events on Saturday, forcing the cancellation⁣ of one race and a significant alteration to another due to hazardous conditions.

Vuelta ⁢a Murcia stage 2 Affected

Stage 2 of the Vuelta a Murcia, which commenced in Fortuna, was⁢ halted shortly after the start. Reports and video footage showed riders struggling to maintain⁢ control in the strong gusts. Race officials persistent it was unsafe to continue.

The race website announced that the remaining portion of the 180km stage would be ⁢completed as a 10-kilometer neutralized section to Santomera. While no time would be recorded, a‍ stage winner would still ‍be declared, and the general classification standings would be determined based on the results of ‍the opening stage.

Marc ⁣Soler⁢ won Friday’s⁢ opening⁣ stage, finishing 19 seconds ahead of Julius Johansen (UAE Emirates-XRG), with Tom Pidcock (pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling) placing third⁤ at 40⁤ seconds.

The original stage 2 route⁤ included the challenging Collado Bermejo climb, but ⁢the ⁣altered format meant the overall standings relied ⁤solely on the outcome of stage 1.

Volta Femenina de la Comunitat Valenciana Stage Cancelled

Similarly, day two of the women’s Setmana Ciclista Volta Femenina de la Comunitat valenciana was abandoned before the start due to the same hazardous wind conditions.

Demi vollering (FDJ United-Suez) secured victory in the opening stage, maintaining her overall lead after ‍Cat Ferguson (Movistar Team) won a bunch sprint on Friday. Vollering currently leads Maeva Squiban (UAE Team ADQ) by 56‍ seconds.

Organizers have confirmed that ‍the race will resume on Sunday, February 15th, with a ‍fourth and final stage between Sagunt and Valencia.

Recent Wind-Related Disruptions

This is not the first instance of high winds impacting Spanish⁣ cycling races recently. Last month, a time trial stage in⁤ the men’s race was also affected by strong winds, although the times from that stage did not contribute to the general classification.
