A Legacy Forged in Loss: The Gaudreau Family’s Inspiring Playground Project
The tragic loss of NHL players John and Matthew Gaudreau last August sent ripples of grief through the hockey world and beyond. But from that sorrow has blossomed a remarkable testament to thier character and commitment to community: a groundbreaking initiative to build a universally accessible playground at archbishop Damiano School in New Jersey. This isn’t just a playground; it’s a living memorial, a vibrant space built on a foundation of love, remembrance, and inclusivity.
This article delves into the story behind this inspiring project, exploring its origins, the incredible outpouring of support, and the future it promises for the students of Archbishop Damiano.
A Family’s Deep Roots at Archbishop Damiano
Archbishop Damiano School holds a special place in the Gaudreau family history. Founded in 1968, the school provides vital services for 135 students with special needs, aged 3 to 21.
Jane Gaudreau, the mother of John and Matthew, has been a finance associate at the school as 1984.
Her brother was a former student. Daughter Kristen has dedicated nearly two decades to teaching at Damiano.
Even the Gaudreau brothers themselves volunteered their time when their hockey schedules allowed.
This deep connection fueled their desire to give back,a desire that took shape with a vision for a playground that truly served all students.
From Tragedy to Transformation: the Playground Initiative
The idea for a modern, accessible playground originated with Principal Michele McCloskey in October 2020. Raising the $600,000 needed was a slow process, but the tragic deaths of John and Matthew in August 2023 ignited a wave of support that propelled the project forward.
The brothers were tragically struck and killed by a suspected drunk driver while cycling on the eve of their sister Katie’s wedding. Their passing sparked an outpouring of grief and a collective desire to honor their memory.
The Gaudreau family channeled this energy into the playground project, aiming to create a space that reflected the brothers’ inclusive spirit and dedication to helping others.
The Power of Community: Fundraising and Support
The response to the Gaudreau Family 5K Walk, held in May,was overwhelming. Despite a prior tornado watch and rain, the event drew a massive crowd and raised significant funds. An online memorabilia auction, extending beyond hockey items, further boosted fundraising efforts.
Friends and colleagues from the NHL and beyond rallied around the cause.
Donors were inspired by the brothers’ legacy of community service and generosity.
“We heard so much from everyone how much they appreciated everything [the brothers] did for the community, and so they turned around and helped us out,” Jane Gaudreau explained. “People were just so generous, wanting to be there for our family and keep John and Matty’s legacy alive.”
the next Gaudreau Family 5K Walk is tentatively scheduled for May 16, 2026.
Building a Playground for Everyone
The new playground isn’t just about fun; it’s about accessibility and inclusion. The design incorporates features to accommodate students of all abilities:
Wheelchair accessibility throughout the play area.
Ramps and transfer platforms for easy access to equipment.
A focus on creating a safe and engaging surroundings for all.
Groundbreaking is planned for late August or early September, with a community build day tentatively set for october 4th. The Gaudreaus and school staff are currently coordinating the logistics, including securing necessary materials like crushed concrete and beach sand. They are actively seeking volunteers to assist with the construction.
A Lasting Legacy
The Gaudreau family Playground represents more than just a physical space. It’s a symbol of resilience, community, and the enduring power of love. It’s a place were students with special needs can play, learn, and thrive, a fitting tribute to the lives of John and Matthew Gaudreau.
This project stands as a powerful reminder that even in the face of unimaginable loss, we can create something stunning and meaningful that honors the memory of those we’ve loved and inspires future generations.
