Intravenous Management is the Sole Approved Route for Tranexamic Acid
Healthcare professionals, including anesthesiologists and hospital pharmacists, have been reminded that the only approved method for administering injectable tranexamic acid is intravenously (IV). This clarification is crucial for patient safety and preventing possibly serious complications.
Administering tranexamic acid through other routes – such as intrathecal, epidural, intraventricular, or intracerebral - is strictly contraindicated. These alternative routes haven’t been studied for safety and efficacy and coudl lead too severe adverse effects.
Preventing Medication Errors: Information, labeling, and Storage
accidental intrathecal administration of tranexamic acid often stems from confusion with injectable local anesthetics, like bupivacaine, levobupivacaine,and prilocaine, which are frequently used during the same procedures. I’ve found that clear communication and meticulous practices are key to avoiding these errors.
To minimize the risk of these potentially dangerous mix-ups, consider these recommendations:
- educate all team members about the potential for confusion between tranexamic acid and other injectable medications, especially those administered via the intrathecal route during the same procedure.
- Exercise extreme caution when handling, storing, and administering intravenous formulations of tranexamic acid. This includes:
- Always verify the labeling on tranexamic acid ampoules to confirm it explicitly states intravenous administration only.
- Store tranexamic acid ampoules in a designated, separate location away from local anesthetics.
