Nigeria Faces Escalating Food Crisis as UN aid Cuts Deepen
Nigeria is grappling with a rapidly worsening food security crisis, with an estimated 35 million people likely to experience severe hunger in 2024 – the highest number in Africa and a record for the country. This crisis is being exacerbated by ongoing violence, displacement, and significant cuts to United Nations food assistance programs. Unless additional funding is secured, the situation is expected to deteriorate further, potentially leading to catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
UN Aid Reduction and its Impact
The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) has announced a drastic reduction in food assistance in Nigeria. In February, aid will be limited to just 72,000 people, a significant decrease from the 1.3 million people assisted during the lean season (May to October) of the previous year. This reduction is due to funding shortfalls, with the WFP stating that generous contributions have been tired. Source: AP News
WFP has been providing food assistance in northeastern Nigeria since 2015,reaching nearly two million people annually in areas most affected by conflict and food insecurity. The agency warns that these cuts will have severe repercussions
