Denmark’s Postal Service Transitions to a Parcel-focused Future
Denmark is undergoing a important shift in its postal landscape. PostNord, the nation’s primary postal service, will discontinue traditional letter deliveries, marking a decisive move towards a parcels-only model. This change reflects a dramatic decline in letter volume and the increasing dominance of digital dialog.
The Decline of Traditional Mail
For years, the number of letters sent in Denmark has been steadily decreasing. Data from the Danish Transport Authority reveals a stark contrast: 1.44 billion letters were sent in 2000, plummeting to just 122 million in 2024. This trend has rendered the traditional letter delivery service financially unsustainable for PostNord.
“Danes have become more and more digital, and that means ther are very few letters left today,” explained PostNord CEO Kim Pedersen earlier this year. The decline is continuing so strongly that the letters market is no longer profitable.
A New era with Dao
Fortunately, letter delivery won’t disappear entirely. From 2026, courier service Dao will assume obligation for handling letters across Denmark. This transition is already underway, with Dao having taken over the majority of letter deliveries throughout 2025.
Hans Peter Nissen, CEO of Dao, anticipates a smooth handover. He believes minimal adjustments will be needed, given the company’s existing involvement in letter distribution.
Dao expects its overall delivery volume – encompassing parcels, magazines, newspapers, and letters – to rise from approximately 150 million in 2025 to between 205 and 210 million in 2026. Around 70 million of these will be letters.
What this Means for You
If you plan to send a letter in Denmark starting January 1st, you’ll need to utilize Dao’s network. Here’s what you need to know:
* Drop-off Locations: You can hand your letter off at any of Dao’s 1,600 pakkeshops (parcel counters) located throughout the country.
* Cost: The price for sending a standard letter will be 23 kroner.
* delivery Speed: dao intends to incentivize continued letter usage by offering fast and reliable delivery.
Maintaining a Letter Delivery Service
Despite the declining numbers, Dao is committed to preserving letter delivery in Denmark. Nissen expressed hope in keeping the remaining letter volume viable.
“Around 90 percent of letter volume has disappeared over the last 20 years. We hope to keep the ones that are left,” he stated.
Dao’s strategy involves combining letter delivery with newspapers, magazines, and parcels. This integrated approach allows for efficient delivery, consolidating all four product types into a single delivery route.
Impact on Employment
This restructuring has sadly resulted in job losses. The closure of PostNord’s letter service has impacted 1,500 employees.
This transition marks a pivotal moment for Denmark’s postal system, reflecting a broader global trend towards digital communication and the evolving needs of consumers. While the era of traditional letter delivery is drawing to a close, Dao’s commitment ensures that this form of communication will remain accessible for those who still rely on it.
