Vitamin C May Protect Fertility from Environmental Chemical
A new study reveals that vitamin C may offer protection against the reproductive health risks posed by exposure to potassium perchlorate, a chemical found in explosives and fireworks.
Potassium Perchlorate and Reproductive Health
Researchers discovered that exposure to potassium perchlorate can negatively impact sperm production, potentially leading to reduced fertility. The study, led by Ramji Bhandari, an associate professor at the University of Missouri, utilized Japanese rice fish (medaka) as a model organism.
Male fish exposed to potassium perchlorate alone exhibited a significant decrease in fertility and noticeable damage to their testes. However, fish exposed to both vitamin C and potassium perchlorate demonstrated improved fertility rates and reduced testicular damage.
